Today we learned about tree sustainability, Smokey the Bear, made a poster, and learned 10 cool facts about trees.
First, Smokey the Bear. I will retell the story for you.
Around 1950 the forests of Captain Mountains, New Mexico. The forests were becoming really dry, the streams getting lower, animals seeking shade and coolness. Insects and butterflies resting. Humans didn’t put out their fires fully, threw lighted match, cigarettes. Smokey the Bear loved his forest, the meadows, towering trees. But one day those cigarettes, matches piled up and a fire started!! It quickly spread throughout the forest. The wind carried the fire burning through the brush. The firemen noticed and rushed to the scene. They made a line clearing all of the potential fire starters like scraggly bushes, dry brush, and leaves. But the fire crossed the line. Animals fleeing, running for their lives. Confusion everywhere. The fire men tried to put the fire out but the wind blew the fire toward them. They lied down and waited out. The fire. When the smoke finally cleared the got up. When they got up they saw a bear cub. That cub was none other than the future Smokey the Bear! The bear went on every poster for preventing forest fires. He went on TV and traveled all around. Even today he inspires others to put out fires, wait until matches are cool to throw them out and to prevent forest fires.
10 Facts About Trees
- A single tree produces about 260 LB’ s of O2, meaning that 2 mature trees can produce enough oxygen for a family of 4
- One tree absorbs the amount of Co2 that a car produces over 26k miles
- There are about 247,000,000,000 with a diameter of over 1 in. In the U.S
- The tallest tree in the U.S is a coastal redwood, about 369ft tall.
- Earth has 60,000 species of trees known to man

- North America’s Bristle Stone Pines live a super long time. The 2 oldest are 4,848 years old and 5,062!!
- A large oak can drop 100,000 acorns in a year
- Earth’s trees didn’t exist of 90% of Earth’s history
It’s important to learn about trees and their benefits because if we learn that trees consume the Co2 that cars produce and that trees produce O2 that we need, then we can try to stop the fact that deforestation will get rid of rainforests within less than 200 years.
Everyone is responsible for trees because everyone lives on Earths and breathes the air that trees produce. Also because the people who have companies for this aren’t only responsible because everyone affects the environment because most drive cars, litter, etc…
I am trying to bike more. To try to stop my parents from driving me everywhere. I am trying not to litter to the best of my ability.
You can encourage others to drop the same like I am. Making a poster. Sending emails. Just regularly reminding others of the importance of trees!
